Cleaning clay – for thorough and gentle vehicle care
Cleaning clay is an indispensable tool when it comes to removing stubborn dirt from the paint surface of your vehicle. Even if the paint appears clean at first glance, deposits such as tar stains, tree resin, industrial dust, rust or insect remains can penetrate deep into the surface and are difficult to remove with normal washing. This is where cleaning clay comes into play.
The clay works by gently pulling it over the paint. It picks up stuck particles without damaging the paint. The result: a smooth, clean surface that is ready for subsequent polishing or sealing. Thanks to its easy application, the cleaning clay ensures that the paint not only looks shiny, but is also really thoroughly cleaned.
Polishing without cleaning clay? – Better not!
If you polish your vehicle's paint without first using cleaning clay, there is a risk that tiny dirt particles that are still stuck to the surface will be rubbed across the paint during the polishing process. This can cause scratches, so-called "swirls" or fine sanding marks that make the paint look dull and uneven. Instead of smoothing the paint and bringing it to a high shine, the trapped dirt can have the opposite effect and even damage the surface.
In addition, the polishing result will not be optimal because the polish cannot be applied evenly due to the impurities. The cleaning clay ensures that the paint is thoroughly freed of invisible particles, resulting in a smoother, deeper shine and improving the durability of waxes or sealants. It is therefore an important step in preparing for a flawless polish.
How to use cleaning clay – here’s how!
Cleaning clay is an efficient tool for removing stubborn dirt such as tar, tree resin or industrial dust from paint. To achieve the best results and protect the paint, you should use the cleaning clay correctly. Here is a simple step-by-step guide:
1. Thorough vehicle washing: Before using the cleaning clay, wash your car thoroughly to remove loose dirt and debris. A clean starting point is important so that the clay can work efficiently.
2. Apply lubricant: After washing the vehicle, spray a lubricant (or special cleaning fluid) generously onto the wet or dry paint. The lubricant ensures that the putty glides smoothly over the surface and leaves no scratches.
3. Preparation: Form the cleaning clay into a flat disc. If the material is particularly hard, you can soften it in warm water beforehand to make it more pliable.
4. Gently push the clay over the paint: Without applying pressure, move the clay in straight lines over the paint. When cleaning the paint, make sure that the surface is always sufficiently moistened with lubricant to avoid scratches. Work your way through section by section to treat the entire surface.
5. Knead regularly: Check the clay for dirt particles from time to time. If you see visible dirt, simply fold the clay in the middle and form it flat again. This will push the dirt particles inside and the cleaning agent will remain effective.
6. Check the effect: To test whether the surface is free of contamination, run your finger lightly over the paint. If you can no longer feel any small bumps, the surface is clean. If there are still "pimples", repeat the process.
7. Aftercare: After use, you should remove any remaining lubricant with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. You can then wipe with a dry microfiber cloth to completely dry the surface.
8. Optional: Polish and seal the paint: To protect the freshly cleaned paint, you can then polish it and treat it with a paint sealant or wax. This ensures long-lasting shine and additional protection.
With these instructions you will ensure that your paint is not only clean, but also smooth and optimally prepared for subsequent polishing.
